Montana Asbestos Exposure

Between 1920 and 1980 asbestos toxins and fibers were at their height of exposure. In Montana, thousands of asbestos-containing products and materials were used in buildings, residential buildings, industrial plants, factories, power plants, chemical plants, refineries, shipyards and manufacturing plants.

Asbestos related deaths in Montana from 1999-2017 total up to 1,520. 337 during that time were Asbestosis Cancer Deaths and 240 were Mesothelioma Cancer Deaths. Estimated-Asbestos Cancer Deaths totaled up to 960.

The mortality rate in Montana for mesothelioma is 14.2 per million.

Settlements

In 2008, $250 Million was awarded U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) against W.R. Grace. W.R. Grace was also required to pay $54 million in fines to the U.S. government to clean up the contamination.
In 2004, $250 Million was settled in favor of a former US Navy electrician victim of Pleural Mesothelioma.
In 2011, $43 Million was awarded in Libby, MT to over 1,300 contractors and former employees against W.R. Grace & Co.
In 2003, $54 Million to the Environmental Protection Agency for cleaning up cost contaminated schools, homes, and businesses in Libby, MT.
$1.7 Million was awarded to an electrician with mesothelioma from workplace asbestos exposure.
$1 million was awarded to a Montana Teamster who received workplace exposure to asbestos and developed mesothelioma.
$1 million was awarded to an auto mechanic in Montana who received a mesothelioma diagnosis from their workplace exposure.
$650,000 was awarded to a janitor in Yellowstone county, MT after being exposed to asbestos on the job.
