Mesothelioma Stage 1
When receiving a Mesothelioma Diagnosis, an earlier diagnosis can improve the survival rate. However, it is more difficult to detect mesothelioma as early as stage 1 because there are very little symptoms. During Stage 1 of Mesothelioma, the tumor can be surgically removed if recommended by an oncologist. There is no current cure available for any stage of Mesothelioma, but quality of life as well as well survival rates can be affected by how early the diagnosis is caught.Â
Stage 1 can be separated into two smaller subsections. Stage 1A, where smaller tumors exist within the pleural lining. In stage 1B, the tumor exists within the pleura as well as spreading into tissue nearby.
Mesothelioma Stage 2
During Stage 2 of Mesothelioma, the tumors spread to organ linings as well as nearby organs and tissues. The average survival time for a patient diagnosed with stage 2 mesothelioma is 20 months.
While stage 1 of mesothelioma has very little symptoms, stage 2 has more common symptoms such as chest pain, chronic coughs, fever, weight loss, and difficulty breathing. During this stage the tumor is still able to be removed surgically when recommended by a doctor. Patients are also able to receive chemotherapy and radiation treatment during this stage.

Mesothelioma Stage 3
Survival rates are low when mesothelioma enters the later stages. Stage 3 mesothelioma cancer is aggressive and therefore harder to treat. Currently, experimental surgery is available as well as clinical trials but there are limited options outside of that.Â
During the third stage of mesothelioma the tumor has spread to the lungs as well as the chest cavity. It is unlikely mesothelioma can be helped at this stage, however, there are several ways to improve quality of life such as removing parts of tumors and therapies that can reduce pain. After a stage 3 mesothelioma diagnosis, a patient is typically given an 18-month life expectancy.Â
Mesothelioma Stage 4
Mesothelioma is often diagnosed at stage 4 because the symptoms until that point resemble common illnesses. Common symptoms of Stage 4 mesothelioma are fatigue, weight loss, fever, pain, blood when coughing, and difficulty swallowing and breathing. At stage 4 the cancer has spread throughout the body, so treatment is very limited. Palliative treatments may be available, but they will not extend life expectancyÂ
After a stage 4 diagnosis is reached, life expectancy is under 15 months. It is important to take legal action to make sure the negligent party is held responsible as well as provide for your family amidst the medical bills.
