Mesothelioma Prognosis

Once receiving a mesothelioma diagnosis, the average life expectancy is four to eighteen months. Because mesothelioma has no cure, the prognosis is poor. However, there are ways to improve life expectancy among patients. Patients can also receive chemotherapy and radiation treatment during these first two stages and surgery, improving their survival rate. After a stage 3 or 4 diagnoses is reached, life expectancy is under 15 months. Depending on how the stage has progressed, life expectancy may be extended by mesothelioma treatments. There is less than a 50% chance that a patient will receive a 5-year survival rate once diagnosed.

Mesothelioma Biopsy

One of the most effective mesotheliomas diagnosing technics is a biopsy. Biopsies collect part of the potentially cancerous tissues and examine them for any mesothelioma signs. Often, a mesothelioma biopsy is used to confirm a diagnosis from an already done imaging scan or blood test. It is not possible to dully diagnose mesothelioma without a biopsy.

Endoscopic biopsies are a more noninvasive option. Doctors insert a small tube into the body with a camera attached. Doctors then have a straightforward way to observe the body without needing to make a large incision.

Another type of biopsy is a fine needle aspiration biopsy. A fine, hollow needle is inserted into the body to extract sample cells for analysis.

Endoscopic Biopsies

  • Thoracoscopy
  • Mediastinoscopy
  • Laparoscopy
